Why it matters most for local businesses
AI Overviews appear above conventional results for a growing share of queries, including ones with clear local intent. A business that ranks well but is absent from the Overview has lost the position that gets read first.
It is also the surface most tightly coupled to conventional search foundations, crawlability, structured data, entity consistency, and the local signals that drive the map pack. Much of the work overlaps with what good local SEO already required.
What we sample, and what we do not
AI Overviews are in our counted set and sampled three times per question under controlled conditions.
Google AI Mode is spot coverage only and is not part of the counted set. We look at it, we do not score it, and we say so rather than folding an unsampled surface into a number.
The honest constraint
Overview presence fluctuates for reasons unrelated to anything an agency did, the feature itself appears and disappears by query and by week. A quarter where the number falls gets reported as a number that fell, with whatever we know about why.
Anyone offering a guarantee on AI Overview presence is guaranteeing the behaviour of a product they do not control.
Read in order, or jump
Twelve chapters, in the order the work has to happen. The first four are the spine; the platform chapters at the end include two surfaces we deliberately do not score, and say why.
